My sister Angelica called me up from MEXICO CITY the moment Obama was announced as president elect. She said “Congratulations brother! looks like the CHANGE is coming”
She is right.

Personally I wish that the spirit of community cooperation continues during Obama’s presidency.

Why Obama makes me cry

Barack Obama’s presidency feels so good because we had such a long march to arrive here. We had slavery that dehumanized black folks. We had Jim Crow laws that made it illegal for us to go where we wanted, when we wanted and do what we wanted.

Last night was a decisive step in dispelling stereotypes about who lives in this country and what we are like and how we think. As I made my way to vote at a nearby school where there were two Spanish-speaking poll workers and one Tagolog (Phillipines) poll worker on hand, I reflected on how inadequately the international image …  Read Morereflects the people of the United States. I recently found out that my zip code, 98118, is one of the most diverse in the U.S. Every day in my neighborhood I see covered women walking confidently on the streets with their children or driving by in their cars. In the mornings I pass by Vietnamese mothers with their children waiting at the school bus stop in sandals in the cold Seattle rain. When it is the least bit sunny I jog past three synagogues on my way to beautiful Lake Washington to admire the view of Mt. Rainier (“Tahoma” to the ancient Puyallup Nation). Best of all, the view is free for anyone who wants to look. I know that people in other countries do not see this great view of Seattle or the United States from where they sit. I hope that with this new president the lens through which we are viewed will broaden, sharpen and change.

How we are seen by the world does and should matter to us if only because so many of us hail from somewhere else, or have friends and family from somewhere else. Yesterday’s historical election was a leap forward towards refocusing our international image, through the kaleidoscope we truly are.

I cried. I wept. Never before have I seen people so moved collectively. The profundity and beauty of this moment is still hitting me. I saw all kinds of people with
various sets of conditions in the world partying together. I saw men cry tears they probably had not shed for a long time. I saw people dance. I saw people hug people they barely knew. I saw folks drink alcohol at peace and in true celebration on the streets. I saw the police do nothing but make sure the party was contained. There was no violence.Congratulations and deep appreciations were exchanged. I saw folks I haven’t seen in years. I made new friends, encountered current ones and poured deep appreciation and love to all I encountered.This is the primary miracle we as species are to perform: The constant recognition of beauty of life before you here and now. Reveling and celebrating in the joy and beauty of it All. This state of being heals the misgivings of the past and creates hope for the future, within a state of deep love and acknowledgement that happens in the present moment.Barack Obama winning the Presidency is something extraordinary to behold and yet points to the extraordinary being born within and exploding out of us. No matter what people’s affiliation is politically this is pointing something new. Even Mc Cain’s concession speech had a depth and high-essence not felt within him during his entire campaign. McCain’s speech was gracious. It was heart-felt. It was authentic. It was human.

We all have acknowledged the challenges politically and otherwise that await us. And yet there are folks still holding on the familiarity of their cyniscism,disbelief and other various forms of mental violence. Regardless, we have given birth to something undeniable, something that has been gestating within us collectively as a species for a long time.We are becoming aligned with our highest and truest nature which is love,excitement, joy and well-being. When aligned with this ALL challenges are met with depth and a true understanding.

It is truly an exciting time. Let us carry this excitement into a mode of celebration of life that flows into our relationships,our work, our politics, EVERY aspect of our existence here and now.
